Belém Private Walking Tour
Tour Details
Have you explored Lisbon's most monumental district? Then we'll meet at the Jardim de Afonso de Albuquerque to begin this private walking tour of Belém. From this garden, we'll approach the National Palace of Belém, the official residence of the President of the Republic.
We'll continue along Rua Vieira Portuense, a street lined with traditional shops, until we reach one of Lisbon's culinary icons: the Pastéis de Belém factory. Here, we'll learn about the origins of these sweets, linked to the nearby monastery.
Nearby, we'll also see the Sala Thai pavilion, a gift from Thailand to Portugal that introduces an unexpected touch to the heart of Belém and recalls the historical diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The tour will then continue to the Church of Santa Maria de Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery, which we'll admire from the outside. We will pause to analyze its Manueline style, an exuberant architectural language that incorporates nautical motifs and symbolism of imperial power.
Afterward, we will cross the Praça do Império and admire the Rosa dos Vientos (Compass Rose), an enormous mosaic that encapsulates Portugal's maritime expansion. The walk will then take us to the Monument to the Discoveries, a veritable stone manifesto dedicated to navigators and cartographers, and to the Belém Lighthouse, before skirting the gardens of the Belém Tower.
We'll admire this late Gothic fortification, built on the Tagus as a defensive bastion and ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. There, you will understand why Belém was the great prow of Portugal during the Age of Discovery.
After a 2.5- to 3-hour tour, we'll say goodbye next to the Belém Tower.
